AMY BEAN RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP TO THE 2008 FALL ASHHRA CONFERENCE!

Fellow ISHHRA Member Amy Bean was one of the lucky recipients of the MetLife ASHHRA Scholarship for the recent conference, which was held in Austin, Texas. If you have never had the opportunity to attend an ASHHRA conference, please see Amy’s note below. Thanks to Amy for her willingness to share this with the ISHHRA members!

First of all, thanks to MetLife for sponsoring the 2nd annual ASHHRA Scholarship Program for the 2008 ASHHRA Conference in Austin Texas. I was excited to learn that I was the Region 5 HR professional chosen to receive this scholarship and honored that I was selected from among other highly qualified individuals. I encourage all ASHHRA members to consider applying for this important award.

I serve as the Human Resources Director for Pulaski Memorial Hospital, a small county hospital in Winamac Indiana that is a critical access hospital. In addition, I am also responsible for the Hospital’s Home Health and Hospice programs and also serve as Compliance Officer. We have limited funding for educational programs, especially funds for national conferences. Therefore the ASHHRA Scholarship Program offered me a unique opportunity to attend important educational sessions, learn about innovative employee programs and network with highly-talented healthcare industry colleagues throughout the US.

The 2008 ASHHRA conference I attended was held in the beautiful and welcoming city of Austin Texas. The weather was warm and the people were very friendly. Of course it didn't hurt that the University of Texas Longhorns beat the Oklahoma Sooners on the Saturday of the start of the conference to become #1 in the country. Texans do love their college football!

The theme of the 2008 ASHHRA conference was Leading with Passion and Purpose and the program was certainly designed to reflect that theme. From the opening speaker Barbara Glanz to the closing speaker Christine Kane the program emphasized how Human Resources professionals must ensure that their employees enjoy a work environment that is meaningful and exciting. The opening and closing speakers brought passion and purpose to us as attendees, both in the content and delivery of their presentations.

The program format provided attendees with the opportunity to attend a variety of breakout educational sessions on a wide array of topics. The breakout sessions give attendees an opportunity to learn about specific topics in greater detail and to ask questions in smaller groups. The sessions often involve healthcare HR professionals describing in detail their HR program initiatives, including presentations on employment, compensation, benefits, legal and regulatory compliance and employee relations. Topics also include patient safety, quality outcomes, productivity improvement and patient and customer satisfaction.

My attendance at the 2008 ASHHRA conference through the ASHHRA Scholarship Program will allow me to;
  • Bring important new ideas related to compensation and benefits that can be implemented immediately for Hospital employees,
  • Share proven HR strategies with the Hospital’s Executive Team and Department Directors,
  • Consider leading-edge initiatives that may provide improvements in HR operations and clinical care,
  • Enhance employee knowledge of HR programs,
  • Encourage employee growth and development,
  • Support employee retention and attraction of highly-qualified applicants, and
  • Increase my personal efficiency and effectiveness through the knowledge I have gained.

Thank you Met Life!
